Nippon Gases Italia

Organization Overview

Nippon Gases Industrial SRL is part of a global industrial gases group and a leading expert in combustion technologies. With a strong patent portfolio and deep expertise in oxy-fuel combustion, the company provides innovative solutions for decarbonising high-temperature industrial processes. Its operations cover green gas production, delivery, and safe storage, with a focus on supporting industries in their transition to low-emission systems. Nippon Gases is engaged in multiple EU-level projects and is a trusted partner for the safe integration of hydrogen technologies.

Project Contribution

In H2AL, Nippon Gases supplies combustion technology and the necessary gases for its operation, including liquid oxygen and compressed hydrogen. The company is responsible for designing and manufacturing burners capable of operating with 100% hydrogen, as well as a control system that manages various blends of hydrogen and natural gas. Nippon Gases also leads the development of hydrogen safety protocols, regulation strategies, and integration roadmaps tailored to 2A’s industrial plants.

Goals

Nippon Gases aims to:

  • Develop and validate innovative combustion systems such as MILD, flameless, and oxy-combustion technologies optimised for 100% H₂ use.
  • Ensure high energy efficiency and minimal pollutant emissions.
  • Establish best practices and specifications for H₂-compatible burners and systems.
  • Demonstrate that hydrogen is a viable substitute for natural gas in combustion applications, particularly in aluminum melting.

Key Expertise

Nippon Gases brings the following strengths to the H2AL project:

  • Green production, delivery, and storage of hydrogen and oxygen under safe conditions.
  • Patented oxy-fuel combustion technologies and extensive experience in aluminum melting.
  • Design and construction of burner systems for industrial processes.
  • Integration of hydrogen safety assessments and regulatory compliance.
  • Participation in EU-funded hydrogen R&D projects such as DevH2forEAF and HEHS.

Challenges and Solutions

The main challenge lies in adapting traditional combustion systems to hydrogen while maintaining efficiency and safety. To meet this, Nippon Gases combines its engineering capabilities with strong collaboration across the H2AL consortium. It contributes technical solutions based on past experience and actively develops new protocols for safe hydrogen use in demanding industrial settings.
